Summer is here and we all want to enjoy our backyards without mosquitoes!
Steps can be taken to prevent an abundance of the pesky critters.
Orkin Canada technical director Sean Rollo says it’s impossible to completely get rid of them but eliminating standing water around your home is a good idea.
“Things like clogged gutters are bad. Water that sits for long periods of time is certainly attractive to them.”
Rollo says keep your grass and other vegetation trimmed and clean items like bird baths on a regular basis.
He says don’t let mosquitoes ruin your summer since there are repellants to protect yourself.
“The ones that tend to be most effective contain the active ingredient of DEET. For those looking for something more natural there are all-natural repellents available.”
Rollo says other tips to avoid mosquitoes include wearing loose, light-coloured clothing and long sleeves and pants if heading into the woods.
He says other effective repellants include clip-ons for your belt or Thermacell radius zone devices.
Rollo adds you should be mindful that it is possible some mosquitoes in New Brunswick could be carrying diseases like the West Nile virus.
