Summer officially arrived in New Brunswick at 6:14 a.m. today.
The summer solstice marks the longest day and the shortest night of the year.
The Weather Network is forecasting above normal temperatures for the season.
Meteorologist Kelly Sonnenburg says we should avoid some of the extremes we saw last summer.
“I know we dealt with extreme heat in parts of western Canada last year. We’re not expecting temperatures to be as hot but a lot of Canadians will be able to enjoy a very warm and at times, humid summer ahead.”
Sonnenburg says precipitation is much harder to forecast in the summer due to thunderstorms.
“Thunderstorms are completely localized. One area can see 50 to locally 75 millimetres of rain in a short period of time. Meanwhile, the community next door didn’t see a single drop.”
On this first day of summer, Moncton will enjoy 15 hours and 46 minutes of daylight and Saint John will have 15 hours and 39 minutes.
