An Indigenous woodcarver and artist has been commissioned by the City of Saint John to create two art pieces to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day.
The first carving by Chi Mokaman will honour the lives and contributions of Indigenous leaders from Greater Saint John.
A second carving will recognize “the painful history of Indigenous peoples and celebrate the opportunities that lie ahead,” said a news release from the city.
The first piece will be unveiled to the community in the fall while the second will be unveiled during a public ceremony next spring.
This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada.
The City of Saint John is joining all Canadians in recognizing June 21, 2022 as National Indigenous Peoples Day.
