A new gender inclusion policy has been approved for international swimming competitions and water sports.
International Swimming Federation (ISF), the governing body, voted for new rules regarding competing transgender athletes.
Swimmers who’ve transitioned before 12 years old will be allowed to compete.
There was a proposal for an “open competition” category, the ISF will be looking at all the angles when it comes to setting up the potential new category.
ISF is recognized by the International Olympic Committee who have worked together to create policy and recommendations.
Canada had it’s first openly transgender and non-binary athlete compete at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. They were part of Team Canada that won a gold medal after defeating Team Sweden.
Meanwhile, other sports have been exploring their rules.
The International Cycling Union (UCI) made adjustments to it’s maximum level for accepted testosterone, and increased the transition period from 12 months to two years.
