Saint John police responded to the east side following reports of an armed person in the Alpine Street and Morley Crescent area.
The call came in just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday, police said in a series of posts on Twitter.
Police say they received reports that a young man may have put a firearm or imitation firearm in his bookbag.
“No confirmation that a real firearm was involved,” police said in a tweet.
Police say a suspect was not located after a search in the area by officers.
The suspect is described as 16 or 17 years old, wearing a grey sweater and jeans.
Police say they have not received any more calls and there are no reports of shots fired or anyone being injured.
Officers were on scene at Forest Hills School but have since cleared. The Irving Oil Field House was also directed to go into lockdown temporarily as a precaution, but that has been lifted.
