Bagpipes will drone and drums will beat as the Greater Moncton Highland Games and Scottish Festival kicks off at the Hal Betts Sportsplex this weekend.
Almost 200 athletes will compete during the event, which is also acting as the host for the 2022 Scottish Masters Athletics International Masters World Championships (MWC).
Many athletes come from countries such as Japan, Germany and Switzerland.
“Some of the top world champions and world record-holders will be coming onto the field and hopefully setting some really big numbers,” said Bryan MacLean, athletic director of the Greater Moncton Highland Games.
Aside from the sporting events, MacLean said there will be bagpipe and drum performances, highland dancing and even whiskey tastings. Other events include sheep herding and shearing, weaving, axe throwing, archery, blacksmithing and workshops.
“We’ve got tons of stuff for the kids, like bouncy castles, face painting and horse rides. We have tons of music and we’ve got a craft beer festival going on as well,” he said.
MacLean said he is glad to bring back the event to the City of Moncton and open it to the public from June 17 to 19.
“We’ve got a great contingent of international throwers and coming here to Moncton, so we’re super excited to host everybody once again,” he said.
