A century-old tradition that ensured children in Greater Saint John had a joyful holiday season is coming to an end.
The Empty Stocking Fund will be winding down over the next month, according to a post on the charity’s website.
Founded in 1912 by Harry “Dutch” Ervin, it was one of the oldest newspaper-sponsored charities in Canada.
“It is bittersweet that today we are writing to let you know that we are winding down the Stocking Fund,” said the post.
“With the recent sale of Brunswick News and the complexities of this multi-sponsor, multi-media endeavour, it was simply not possible to keep it going in its current form.”
In February, it was announced that Toronto-based media company Postmedia would be acquiring Brunswick News and its nine Irving-owned newspapers in New Brunswick.
While there will not be a telethon or fundraising drive this year, the charity will distribute its remaining funds to about 2,000 children, through its partner agencies, this coming Christmas time.
“It is thanks to the tremendous contributions of our partners, sponsors, and volunteers that this labour of love has been able to do so much good and make a difference for children in need at Christmas time over the years,” said the post.
“Heartfelt gratitude goes out to everyone who contributed their time and energy to support the initiative and bring the event to life on camera during the live eight-hour television show.”
The Empty Stocking Fund raised more than $260,000 last year, setting a new record.
