The provincial government has put to rest any further discussion about one centralized airport for southern New Brunswick.
In developing a new air sector strategy with consultants, transportation and infrastructure minister Jill Green admits she initially thought one centralized airport might be the answer for southern New Brunswick.
But Green said she changed her mind after data was collected and analysed from airports in Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton.
“Everything to do with finances, routes, everything that they’re working on going forward (was examined) plus working with Intervistas (Consulting) who are specialized in the air sector determined that the data does not support it,” she noted.
“We will get the best return on our investment by supporting the existing airports but encouraging them all to collaborate rather than competing against each other.”
Last week, the province unveiled a new air sector strategy which included a $4 million commitment to develop new air routes.
