Residents and visitors will have the chance to view art installations in August.
THIRD SHIFT will run from August 19 to 21. It is a contemporary art event that celebrates creativity and connectivity.
The three-day event includes an art-at-night event, free workshops, keynote speakers, and community panels.
The festival is organized by Third Space, a not-for-profit artist-run centre in Saint John.
Executive Director of Third Space, Kathleen Buckley, mentioned in an interview that the event will shift locations.
“When we put out a call for proposals artists explained what they would like to do for their installation. They were also invited to select a location in the uptown area that they thought would suit their installation idea,” said Buckley.
“A lot of the artists that were selected chose areas around the Union Street area, so in our festival planning, we scouted out some locations along Union Street, which also includes King’s Square, and the City Market, and the festival area will go all the way down Union Street to the harbour.”
This year’s event will feature 17 artists and collaborative creators who will showcase their art installations and artworks that explore topics such as climate change, personal histories, soundscapes, and more.
Buckley explains how Third Space decides which 17 artists will take part in the event.
“We put out calls for proposals usually at the beginning of the year, and then we have a jury that will select the installations in the March and April area, and now we’re in the planning phase where the artists have been selected,” said Buckley.
The theme for this year’s THIRD SHIFT is ‘Peripheries’, which will address the boundaries and limits someone may experience.
