A memorial stone will be unveiled on Saturday at the Lorneville Seaview Cemeteries to honour the veterans and fishermen lost in its history.
The memorial includes the names of 60 Veterans buried in the cemeteries and eight who lost their lives in service.
Cemetery president Shayne Galbraith recalled two fishermen lost when their boat overturned in a storm.
“They had written a message about how long they were able to hang on and they finished with a goodbye from the fishermen Samuel Ferguson and Harold Galbraith,” Galbraith said.
Ferguson and Galbraith died on July 9, 1915. Their farewell message is part of a photo display at the Lorneville Community Centre after the service.
Galbraith said the monument will also remember a Saint John police officer from the community.
“The only member or known member who died on duty was Constable Perry McCavour. He was a member of the Saint John Police Force. He died while on duty on January 1st, 1926,” Galbraith said.
30-year-old Const. Stephen Perry McCavour responded to a noise complaint at the Seaman’s Mission on Prince William Street.
After returning a second time, McCavour was involved in a skirmish with a man at the mission which resulted in him falling down the stairs.
He died in hospital from his injuries, leaving behind four kids including an infant.
The memorial stone will be unveiled in a ceremony at the cemeteries starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The ceremony at 2690 Lorneville Road will include the colour guard from the Branch 69 Legion.
Galbraith said everyone is welcome to attend.
