A lighthouse in Cape Tormentine has been heavily damaged by fire just days before it was supposed to be moved to a new location.
“A Lighthouse Walk” was planned on Saturday as the lighthouse was moved about one-kilometre by a horse-pulled carriage from its present site to the Cape Tormentine Beach Campground.
Dave Kowlessar, with the Cape Tormentine Community Development Corporation, said the fire occurred on Wednesday and an investigation is underway which includes RCMP.
He said it doesn’t appear the lighthouse is repairable.
“Well, it’s not usable right now. So that’s all we know at this point. It’s under investigation so we can’t comment any further.”
With a foundation in place, Kowlessar says the Cape Tormentine community plans to build a new lighthouse at the campground.
“We do intend to proceed with establishing the lighthouse presence on the campground because we already have one there,” he noted.
In the meantime, Kowlessar added the community is resilient and all festivities planned for the event will still go ahead on Saturday starting at noon.
