The Saint John area will be busy this weekend with the long-anticipated return of the East Coast Games.
The event wasn’t held for the past two years because of the pandemic.
Co-chair Kelly Lynch said competitions will be held at several venues in Saint John and the Kennebecasis Valley involving 13 different sports.
“There are some really cool different sports that you don’t think of sometimes like fencing and cricket and karate and lots of the traditional one with our road race and running race, basketball and softball of course,” said Lynch.
Lynch said the event started in 2015 and continues to grow despite the two-year hiatus.
“This year, we are going to hit the 10,000 mark. Over 10,000 athletes have participated in the games since they began. We are pretty pumped to be putting on this spectacular event for the greater Saint John area,” Lynch said.
For the first time, the lacrosse competition will be held in Grand Bay-Westfield.
Lynch said a full family day is planned on Saturday at Wells Recreation Park in Rothesay.
“We’re going to have our opening ceremonies at 1 o’clock. We’ll have representatives from the town and the East Coast Games,” Lynch said.
The under-9 and under-11 softball competition also takes place at Wells Recreation Park.
Families can check out free activities including face painting and the balloon man.
The East Coast Games begin Friday and run until Sunday.
