100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John has made its latest donation to a local charity in the city.
The Compassionate Grief Centre in Saint John will receive $26,000 from the group of generous women.
Every three months, the women hear presentations from three local charitable organizations and then vote on which one to donate to. Each woman who attends the meeting writes a cheque for $100 to the winning charity.
It was the first time the Compassionate Grief Centre has presented to the group of women. The Saint John Learning Exchange and the KV Oasis Youth Centre also gave presentations Tuesday night.
“Women continue to be inspired by the efficient and meaningful work of our organization, and women continue to rise up and join our organization,” said Debbie Rathwell, who co-founded the local chapter.
100 Women Who Care also heard from the executive director of Romero House, which received a donation of $26,200 from the group in March.
Evelyn McNulty said they have served more than 38,000 meals since March 1, including 12,769 during the month of May alone, marking their busiest month ever.
McNulty said it is becoming harder and harder for many in the community to make ends meet, and they are continuing to see new faces every day.
“Your financial assistance in March gave us some welcomed security in these trying times and helped us to continue doing what we do best — serving those in need and ensuring no one in our community needs to go hungry,” said McNulty.
The local chapter of 100 Women Who Care has donated more than $909,000 to more than 30 charities since its inception in 2013.
