New Brunswick recorded two additional deaths related to COVID-19 for the week ending Saturday, June 4.
That is according to the latest weekly COVID-19 report released by the Department of Health on Tuesday.
The latest deaths, according to the provincial report, involve one person in their 70s and one person in their 80s.
There have now been 421 deaths attributed to the virus in New Brunswick since the pandemic began.
Meanwhile, New Brunswick’s two health authorities are reporting an increase in the number of active COVID-19 hospitalizations.
The latest figures show 66 people in the hospital as of Saturday, which includes two in intensive care. That is compared to the 59 hospitalizations and four ICU admissions reported by the health authorities one week earlier.
- Horizon Health: 46 active admissions and two in intensive care; compared to 30 active admissions and two in intensive care one week ago.
- Vitalité Health: 20 active admissions and zero in intensive care; compared to 29 active admissions and two in intensive care one week ago.
The figures reported by the health authorities include those hospitalized for COVID and those with the virus being treated primarily for other conditions.
Meanwhile, the latest weekly COVIDWATCH update from the province showed 28 people in the hospital for COVID-19 as of Saturday, an increase of three. The number of people in an ICU for COVID-19 is up by one to three.
The numbers from the province only include patients who were hospitalized as a result of COVID-19.
There were 20 new hospital admissions for COVID over the past week compared to 14 new admissions the previous week, according to Public Health. One of those new admissions involved someone under the age of 10.
According to health officials, there were two new ICU admissions for COVID-19 over the past week.
“The highest portion of hospitalizations for COVID-19 is among individuals aged 60-79,” the Department of Health said in its weekly report.
According to the two health authorities, 94 health care workers were off the job as of Saturday after testing positive for COVID-19, up slightly from 91 a week earlier.
There were 893 reported positive cases of COVID-19 over the past week, including 533 PCR tests and 360 rapid tests. Last week, there were more than 1,000 positive test results reported.
In terms of vaccinations, the Department of Health says 1,097 doses were given out over the past week, including 109 first doses, 255 second doses, and 734 booster doses.
Just over 88 per cent of eligible New Brunswickers have received two doses and 52.6 per cent have received booster shots.
