This is the peak time for ticks in our region and an expert says while we should be concerned, we shouldn’t panic.
The tick population has been rising in recent years.
The black-legged tick or deer tick is the biggest concern since it can transmit Lyme disease to humans.
Sean Rollo with Orkin Canada says we should pay attention when we’re in forested areas, along trails or any areas with tall grasses.
“If you have an unkept lawn take note – I know ‘No Mow May’ was just happening. We’ve got a lot of folks with very long grass and if you’re passing through that area, there may be some ticks lurking in there.”
Rollo has some recommendations when we decide to venture where ticks may be present.
“If you’re going on a hike, you should wear long pants rather than shorts. If you can tuck your pant legs into your socks that’s even better. Wear lighter coloured clothes rather than dark since dark tends to attract them a little more than lighter. Also, put on some sort of insect repellent with DEET.”
Rollo believes we should focus more on educating ourselves about ticks and urges everyone to try and find reputable sources online.
