Saint John fire crews quickly knocked down a fire in a home in Millidgeville on Monday morning.
Crews were called to the 400 block of Millidge Avenue just before 11 a.m., according to Platoon Chief Steve Voutour.
“It was actually reported by a member of our staff from training who was driving by and noticed some smoke,” Voutour said in an interview.
Voutour said crews arrived on the scene to find smoke coming from the basement of the one-store home.
“When crews made entry, the room had already flashed over, so the fire had pretty much extinguished itself,” he said.
Firefighters put out a small amount of residual fire before checking to see if had spread into the structure itself, he said.
“There’s a significant amount of damage to the basement area of the home. The upstairs main living area would have suffered smoke, no water damage. The basement also has smoke and water damage, as well,” said Voutour.
No one was home at the time and fire crews were able to save two cats from the building, he said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
