One of six federal Conservative leadership candidates was in Saint John on Saturday.
Pierre Poilievre spoke in front of several hundred residents at the Saint John Trade & Convention Centre.
“Ladies and gentlemen I am running for Prime Minister because people tell me they feel they have lost control of their lives,” mentioned Poilievre as he addressed the crowd.
Poilievre brought up how a Conservative government under his leadership would address the rising cost of living and inflation.
“My common-sense plan to tackle inflation … Trudeau has proposed another $100 billion of extra spending above and beyond the previous spending we’re already doing, we don’t need more government spending, we need more money in your pocket.”
Another tool Poilievre suggested to address inflation is the ‘Pay as you go’ law.
“This means the government would have to buy a dollar of savings every time it brings in a new dollar of unbudgeted spending,” mentioned Poilievre.
The federal carbon tax was also part of the conversation.
“When you live in Canada, a big cold country, heating your home and driving to work is not a luxury it is a necessity, and a Pierre Poilievre government would cut the carbon tax,” said Poilievre.
Before the trip to Saint John, Poilievre also visited Woodstock and Edmundston.
Conservatives will elect their new leader on Sept. 10. Members must be in good standing by June 3.
