New Brunswick recorded five more deaths related to COVID-19 for the week ending Saturday, May 21.
That is according to the latest weekly COVID-19 report released by the Department of Health on Tuesday.
The latest deaths involve one person in their 60s, two people in their 70s, and two people in their 80s.
There have now been 416 deaths attributed to the virus in New Brunswick since the pandemic began.
Meanwhile, New Brunswick’s two health authorities are reporting a drop in the number of active COVID-19 hospitalizations.
The latest figures show 96 people in the hospital as of Saturday, which includes 12 in intensive care. That is compared to the 121 hospitalizations and six ICU admissions reported by the health authorities one week earlier.
Horizon Health reported 75 active admissions (nine ICU cases) and Vitalité Health had 21 active admissions (three ICU cases).
The figures include those hospitalized for COVID and those with the virus being treated primarily for other conditions.
Meanwhile, the latest weekly COVIDWATCH update from the province showed 27 people in the hospital for COVID-19 as of Saturday, a decrease of eight. The number of people in an ICU for COVID-19 fell by two to two.
The numbers from the province only include patients who were hospitalized as a result of COVID-19.
There were 21 new hospital admissions for COVID over the past week compared to 24 new admissions the previous week, according to Public Health. One of those new admissions involved someone under the age of 20.
According to the two health authorities, 143 health care workers were off the job as of Saturday after testing positive for COVID-19.
There were 1,410 reported positive cases of COVID-19 over the past week, including 768 PCR tests and 642 rapid tests. Last week, there were more than 1,800 positive test results reported.
In terms of vaccinations, the Department of Health says 88 per cent of eligible New Brunswickers have received two doses and 52.3 per cent have received booster shots.
