In celebration of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John’s 50th anniversary, they want residents to try bowling for gold as part of its annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser.
The “Golden Bowl” will help Big Brothers Big Sisters raise funds so it can continue supporting youth mentorship from Sussex to Charlotte County.
Laurie Collins, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John, said the last few years have been difficult for fundraising due to the pandemic, so she’s looking forward to bringing the event back to town.
Still, she admits that it feels strange finally getting to return to the bowling lanes.
“We’re looking for the community support to be able to help us to get back to the full services that we typically offer because we’ve had to trim those just a little bit,” said Collins in an interview Thursday.
Collins said there are several gold-themed bowling events where the public can participate. On top of that, she said residents can other games like trivia, contests, and door prizes to add to the celebratory atmosphere.
Something new this year is an outdoor bocce ball event hosted by J.D. Irving at Chown Park.
“Typically, the JD Irving employees will join us for Bowl for Kids’ Sake at the bowling alley,” said Collins. “But this year, they decided for the comfort of folks getting [used] to being in-person that we would hold an outdoor event this year.”
Bowl for Kids’ Sake is being stretched out over a couple of days this year:
- Thursday, May 26 – from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Fairview Lanes
- Saturday, May 28 – from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Fairview Lanes
- Thursday, June 9 – from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Chown Park
Collins said Big Brothers Big Sisters appreciates all of its teams and sponsors that have come on board to support youth mentoring.
“That’s what it’s all about — giving back to the kids in our community and helping them achieve their full potential,” she said.
