A shortage of certain baby formula products is affecting parents in Canada.
Health Canada has reported low stocks of infant formula designed for babies with food allergies and certain medical conditions.
This is due to the closure of Abbott Laboratories in the United States, which has been shut down for more than three months due to contamination issues.
Field Agent Canada visited 77 retail stores across the country this month to see if Canada has been hit as hard as the United States.
General manager Jeff Doucette says, “We took photos of the baby formula sections and assessed the percentage of items that were out-of-stock. We found that about 21 per cent of items were out of stock during our visits, which is about half the 40 per cent of out-of-stocks being reported in the US.”
Doucette adds, the concern has prompted panic buying, “Unnecessarily buying products is just going to make the product out of stock worse and harder to recover from.”
He says some stores have implemented policies restricting the number of products you can buy.
