The Saint John Sea Dogs have reportedly cut ties with head coach Gordie Dwyer.
The news was first reported on Sunday by TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger.
Gardiner MacDougall will serve as the team’s interim head coach, according to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek.
MacDougall, the head coach of the University of New Brunswick’s men’s hockey team, will reportedly resume coaching at UNB following the tournament.
Officials with the Sea Dogs have not responded to our request for comment on the reported changes.
Dwyer was named head coach of the Sea Dogs last summer, becoming the team’s fourth head coach in less than four years.
The coaching change comes less than a month before the Sea Dogs host the Memorial Cup tournament.
Saint John ended the regular season third in the league standings with a 47-17-1-3 record.
The season got off to a rough start for the Sea Dogs, who won just 15 of their 30 games played before the Christmas break.
But they ended the regular season with a 15-game winning streak, losing only six of 38 games after the break.
The Sea Dogs were eliminated in the first round of the President Cup playoffs after falling to Rimouski three games to two.
