Seven New Brunswick recipients will be recognized with National Inclusive Education Awards.
The awards recognize people or groups that have shown leadership in inclusive education both in and out of the classroom.
Bea Allen, a physical education teacher at Chris Saunders Memorial Elementary School in Quispamsis, is one of the recipients.
Allen’s teaching is “flexible and responsive to the make-up of each class and their needs,” according to a release from the New Brunswick Association for Community Living.
“As part of her commitment to her students’ needs, Bea created a safe space where students can self-regulate their emotions as needed.”
The Cook Instructional Team at NBCC Moncton — Owen Brinson, Robert Black and Kevin Robert — are also being recognized for their commitment to supporting each student to successfully complete the program.
“They endeavour to provide all students with a positive learning environment where they are supported by their peers and feel safe to ask questions or for additional help,” said the release.
Kiki Tanfara, a resource teacher at Harbour View High School in Saint John, is also being recognized.
According to the release, Tanfara had a major impact on one student with anxiety around school after previous negative experiences.
“Thanks to her consistency, creativity, empathy and compassion, the student says they now feel safe at school for the first time in nine years because of Kiki,” said the release.
Ginette Bourque, a grade two teacher at École Grande-Digue, is also among this year’s recipients.
“Ginette recognizes and celebrates each child’s strengths, while providing strategies or pairing students with a classmate with complimentary strengths to help them overcome challenges. She considers the needs and interests of each child, and adapts educational activities to meet the diversity of her students,” said the release.
After two years of virtual events, this year’s award ceremony will be hosted by New Brunswick Lieutenant-Governor Brenda Murphy at Government House in Fredericton.
