The founder of a social pediatrics centre in Memramcook is being recognized by the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation.
Dr. Élaine Deschênes has been named this year’s recipient of the Erminie Cohen Compassion Award.
Deschênes founded the Southeast Social Pediatric Centre, which provides care and services to children and families in vulnerable situations.
“Dr. Élaine’s dedication has never wavered over the years, and she has always put the children and their families at the forefront of this initiative. Rarely have we seen a service model in our field that is so responsive, effective, accessible, and community-based,” said Estelle Lanteigne, director of the Réseau-action Service Organization, in support of Deschênes’ nomination.
“The central role that Dr. Élaine Deschênes has played (and continues to play) in the implementation of this service model will have an impact on multiple generations of children in New Brunswick, making the future brighter.”
Social pediatrics reaches out directly to vulnerable children and families to provide them with the care and services they need.
A social pediatrics centre is a safe, accessible, and welcoming space located within the community it serves.
Deschênes will be recognized during the foundation’s 20th-anniversary celebration in Saint Andrews in June.
The Erminie Cohen Compassion Award was created in memory of the late senator and founder of the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation.
Recipients are chosen based on their outstanding contribution to the welfare and well-being of children, youth, and/or families in New Brunswick, as well as their ability to inspire and be a catalyst or mentor for the engagement of others.
