Most of New Brunswick is now under a burn ban with the exception of three counties in the north – Madawaska, Restigouche and Gloucester.
Wildfire prevention officer Roger Collet says this is a dangerous time for fires especially given the dry weather recently.
“Just make sure you’re aware of the surroundings and aware of the dead standing grasses that could ignite. So that’s usually what happens – not aware of the grasses ready to burn.”
Fortunately, Collet says the forests are still quite humid which is good news for any potential fires.
“Humidity is as good as rain. If a fire does start with humidity, it doesn’t really have the opportunity to go anywhere. It will burn slow… more of a smolder.”
But Collet says open areas like fields have dead grasses which can ignite quickly under dry conditions.
Data from the Department of Natural Resources shows 89 fires have been recorded so far this season across the province.
Although that number is higher than last year at this time, it’s still below the ten-year average for fires.
