Part two of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s hearing on a license renewal application for the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station is underway in Saint John.
NB Power is seeking a 25-year license while the commission staff recommend a 20-year renewal.
Commission president Rumina Velshi offered clarity on the hearing’s mission.
She noted how several intervenors will discuss future plans at Point Lepreau concerning small modular reactors and potentially transporting nuclear waste to an off-site waste storage facility.
“It is important to remind the participants that such activities are not part of this renewal application and authorization for such activities will come before the commission, be subject to the Commission’s hearing process and review in due course,” Velshi said.
The hearing is the first in-person hearing held by the Commission since 2020.
