Helping teens cope with the impacts of COVID-19 will be the topic of an upcoming event in Saint John.
‘Coming out of COVID: How to Help Your Teen Cope’ will take place at Simonds High School on May 4.
It is organized by the Parent School Support Committees (PSSC) of four Saint John-area high schools that developed the ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Teen’ series.
“It Takes a Village to Raise a Teen started out as a conversation that there were issues that parents were finding with their teenagers, and if there was a way to provide information to parents throughout the Saint John area, and see if we could help them cope with some of the issues that they are having with their teenagers,” said Lori Gillies, chair of Simonds High School PSSC.
The event is a chance for parents to hear from presenters who will share their perspectives on how they feel teenagers are coping with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“We want the parents to walk away feeling like they received information, maybe it might not be new information, but it’s from someone else, and perhaps that speaker is able to give certain instances where it hits home for the parents,” mentioned Gillies.
There will be three speakers presenting at the event:
- Kate Flood of Laura Gatien & Associates (Clinical Therapy Practice)
- Tricia Wilson of Seen Heard Found Counseling
- Peter Smith of the Anglophone South School District
Following presentations, parents will get the chance to ask questions and visit booths from local agencies.
Doors open at 6 p.m., with presentations beginning at 6:30 p.m.
