Concerns over a crumbling iconic figure in Maugerville, New Brunswick, have prompted people to give.
The ‘Potatoman’ statue has been a popular fixture for the past 53 years, attracting people from all around the world.
He is the smile and wave that New Brunswickers and tourists have taken note of since 1969.
He was erected by Winston Bronnum for the late Carl Harvey, father of Gordon (Buzz) Harvey, who was the previous owner of Harvey’s Big Potato.
Daniel Boudreau bought the business, which included the statue in 2021, and renamed the business ‘Silver Valley Farms: The Big Potato.’
He said it would be a shame to see the Potatoman go, but it will cost upwards of $10, 000 to repair, and it is becoming a safety hazard.
Boudreau has launched a GoFundMe page, “It’s heartwarming to see how many people have donated to the cause and want to see this thing remain for generations to come,” added Boudreau about the fundraiser. “The only upgrade we might do if we raise the funds is adding a base and putting our actual firm name on the Potatoman. From the ground to around the bend of his knees kind of thing. We might put a rectangular concrete base and put Silver Valley Farms painted on it. That’s the only upgrade we’re thinking of doing. Otherwise, he’ll be restored to full original glory.”
As of Friday morning, more than $7,700 had already been raised.
He has scheduled the work to be done on May 30th.
