If you’re planning to buy a new vehicle these days, you’ll likely have to place an order and delivery could take anywhere from ten to 18 weeks.
The president of the New Brunswick Automobile Dealers Association says the lack of vehicles began with a semiconductor shortage last year but the issue has now become even more complex.
Chris Downey says the latest factor involves the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“The world’s number one leading provider of neon is Ukraine. Neon is used in semiconductors. So it just kind of seems like once we get one problem fixed, something else pops up.”
Downey says dealers across the province have been coping reasonably well with new vehicle shortages and most customers have been patient.

“It is going to take us a little while even with full production to be able to catch back up to where we have a pool inventory. So you know, I’d say best-case scenario you’re looking at skinny lots for six months.”
In a worst-case scenario, Downey adds the shortage of new vehicles will last even longer.
