Starting Friday, Canadian Red Cross volunteers will begin a door-to-door campaign in flood-prone areas of New Brunswick, Ontario and Alberta.
Participating homeowners will get information about flood awareness and simple low-cost actions that reduce risks and increase their readiness for an emergency.
Allie Murchison-Maguire of the Red Cross suggests simple changes including cleaning out your eaves and around your foundation.
“Going to your local hardware store and making sure you have the proper plumbing and drainage in your basement,” Murchison-Maguire said.
About 15 volunteers from all over the province will be in the Saint John area knocking on doors this weekend.
Up to 300 households have been targeted for the project, which is supported by the Royal Bank of Canada.
The project was delayed for two years by the pandemic. Murchison-Maguire said they are just now feeling comfortable enough to have a door-to-door campaign.
“It didn’t feel like it was right to do it in 2020 or 2021 and now that things are loosening a bit and people are wearing the PPE as I mentioned, it just felt like the right time,” Murchison-Maguire said.
