The New Brunswick Medical Society has called on the Higgs government to reinstate the mask mandate, in part to reduce the pressure on schools as COVID-19 cases increase.
The subject came up Wednesday night during the monthly meeting of the Anglophone South District Education Council (DEC).
Superintendent Zoë Watson was asked if it was a mistake to lift the rule on masking.
“I wouldn’t be the professional with respect to answering that question. The first week back after March Break, the week of the 14th, we did see a number of masks on students. I think our principals would report now, they don’t see masks,” Watson said.
Watson said the district has been very careful to make sure everyone knows wearing masks is a personal choice.
“It’s OK to wear it or if you chose not to or to wear one on certain days or certain times, that’s OK,” Watson said.
One DEC member, Amanda Hamm, whose family is currently experiencing the ravages of COVID-19, urged Public Health to reinstate the mask mandate.
