A weekend fundraiser organized by the newly-formed Ukrainian Association of Saint John was a huge success.
Organizers say close to 700 people came out to the fundraising fair at the Jervis Bay Legion on Saturday.
Svitlana Goncharova tells us more than $22,000 was raised, with the final total still being counted.
The goal was to raise money for medical supplies and other essential items needed by people in Ukraine.
In addition, to help meet the essential needs of families from Ukraine arriving in Saint John.
Goncharova said the event was also a chance for Saint Johners to experience Ukrainian culture.
In an interview last week, Goncharova said they are very grateful for the support the Ukrainian community has received from local residents since the war began.
“They donated items [and] time, they text us and send their prayers. I see how people care deeply about Ukraine. It’s so heartwarming. It really helps,” she said.
