Mother Nature has been cooperating in Southeast New Brunswick lately which has led to a great maple syrup season so far in the region.
David Briggs, president of Briggs Maples in Hillsborough, says a number of factors are making it a great year.
“The sap has been running… it’s been doing very well. The sugar content is higher in the sap so we don’t have to boil it as much to get an end result. It’s making a lighter product this year which is always encouraging.”
While it has been a tremendous year for production, Briggs notes how it’s been challenging trying to cope with increased costs.
“The packaging has gone up and bottle prices have increased. The shipping to get those goods here has increased.”
Unfortunately, Briggs adds this will mean higher prices for consumers this year.
About 12,000 trees are tapped by Briggs Maples on both Crown and private land in Albert County near Fundy National Park.
