New Brunswick health officials are reporting nine deaths related to COVID-19 over the past week.
That is according to the new COVIDWATCH, a new reporting mechanism from the province.
The latest update from the province includes data from March 27 to April 2.
There are 78 people in the hospital for COVID-19, including two people under the age of 10, and nine of those patients require an ICU.
Last week’s report showed 142 COVID-related hospitalizations, which included people admitted to the hospital for COVID-19 and those admitted for other reasons who later tested positive for the virus.
The province has stopped reporting the latter, hence why the number of hospitalizations appears significantly lower. In fact, the number of people in the hospital for COVID-19 increased by 12 over the past week, from 66 to 78.
“To align with reporting practices in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, reported hospitalizations will only include people hospitalized for COVID,” the province said in a news release Tuesday.
Over the past week, the province recorded 3,888 positive PCR tests and 4,782 rapid tests, for a total of 8,670.
When it comes to vaccinations, 93 per cent of eligible New Brunswickers have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, 87.7 per cent have received two doses, and 51.4 per cent have received a booster dose.

The province’s new webpage to monitor COVID-19 includes infographics containing information such as ICU admissions, hospitalizations, deaths, rapid test and PCR test results, and vaccination rates.
There will also be a more detailed report, which will include the seven-day moving average of confirmed COVID-19 cases and the number of cases with breakdowns by zone and age.
“The number of cases recovered will change to reflect national reporting standards. The number of patients on ventilators and the number of hospital staff off work due to COVID-19 will no longer be reported by Public Health, but those numbers will be available from the regional health authorities,” reads a release from the province.
