Maiden, a 58-foot aluminium ocean yacht, and its all-female crew will arrive in Saint John in August.
The vessel and its crew have been on a world tour, travelling to different cities and raising awareness about the importance of girls’ education and women’s empowerment.
It started in January, launched from Dubai, and will travel 90,000 nautical miles.
The crew has a strong outreach mission, and while in Saint John want to connect with young people.
“They want to connect with young people who may want to learn more about what the vessel is and what they have been for the last few decades, and what the typical goal of this journey around the world is,” said Paula Copeland, director of engagement, Port Saint John.
“So, it will be outreach to sailing schools, day camps, and other things happening in the city, as well as some local non profits and charities, so it will be a combination of them visiting groups, and having groups down by the vessel to visit them there,” continued Copeland.
The focus will also be on encouraging girls into science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
For the next few months, Maiden will make her way through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, making a few short stops before final preparations in Palma for the Trans-Atlantic to arrive in Florida in April.
It will then work the U.S. coast before reaching Saint John between August 3 to 10.
