An organization representing low and moderate income residents, is applauding a rent cap introduced in this week’s provincial budget.
Rent hikes are being capped at 3.8 per cent for one year, retroactive to January 1, 2022.
Spokesperson for ACORN Moncton Peter Jongelnleenen says this is good news, “There’s actually another part that was added as well that we discussed. Big part of our campaign was around eviction protection. So there is a little bit more in the way of eviction protections. I know that it’s not perfect, but I would say definitely, it is a win.”
He adds there are always things that can be improved, “We want to try and get and make it so that it’s no longer temporary, that it’s permanent rent control in the province. That’s the big focus now, and to also kind of add a little bit more to the Residential Tenancies Act for tenants.”
Jongelnleenen says they knew this wasn’t going to happen right away and it would take a lot of discussion and rallying the government, but he is glad that all of their hard work finally paid off.
