Voting is underway for this year’s Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup.
A girls hockey team made up of players from Southeast New Brunswick was the only one in the province chosen for the regional finals..
Coach of the U13 SEFHA FURY Ty MacKinnon says, “It is a contest that’s gone on for six years now this is the sixth year of the good deeds cup so being a hockey fan and watching hockey in Canada we seen it over the years and always thought it would be something nice to participate in so that’s why we entered it. You create your video, you find something that you’d like to a charity or organization that you’d like to help out. A panel of their judges, they call them good deed ambassadors. They pick the regional finalists. So there’s 10 regional finalists, one from each province. Three territories are combined together and this year, they actually added a wildcard so there’s an 11th team in the contest.”
As regional finalists, the team won $2000 for a charity of their choice, “We’ve selected Crossroads for Women. Our team is an all female team I think it was kind of important to do something that was revolved around women.”
The FURY built an outdoor ice rink at the women’s shelter and donated equipment, so the women and children can experience a game they love so much.
MacKinnon says their team is about so much more than hockey, “Something that I always think at the beginning of the season when I speak to the parents is that we’re raising people first and athletes second. Chances are these girls are going to remember the things that they’ve done socially and that they were able to do for the community more so than even wins or losses.”
To be crowned the top winner,. they need public’s votes. It comes with a prize of up to $100, 000 which will also go to Crossroads for Women.
Voting is open until April 2nd, on the Chevrolet Good Deed Cup website.
