A new building is set to be built at Wells Recreation Park in Rothesay.
On Wednesday, both the federal and provincial governments announced funding for the facility.
The Higgs government is providing a grant of $486,000 through the Regional Development Corporation.
“Communities flourish when people have places to gather, interact and participate in physical activity,” said Attorney General Ted Flemming.
“The park has seen increased use over the past years as the town has grown. This investment will ensure it will be enjoyed for many years to come,” added Flemming.
Meanwhile, the federal government through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Canada Community Revitalization Fund will provide $500,000.
“I am pleased the federal government is supporting key infrastructure upgrades at the park that will contribute to the health and vitality of this community,” said Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long.
The total cost of the facility is roughly $1.7 million, and construction is anticipated to be complete within a year.
“We’re hoping to have shovels in the ground very soon … we’ve been working away at that park adding, and adding, so it’s unique,” said Rothesay Mayor Nancy Grant.
Grant also mentioned the building will be a flexible space.
“There will be space for meetings, a space to show things such as films, a kitchen space … as well as year-round washrooms for users of the park, which will be a huge boom, and it is an accessible building,” added Grant.
