Here is a sure sign that spring is not too far away now in New Brunswick.
Spring weight restrictions for truck traffic come into effect later this month.
The restrictions will begin at midnight on Feb. 27 in southern New Brunswick and a week later in the north.
“The roadways this time of year are weakened compared to the rest of the year, so it’s important to put these restrictions in place for the protection of those roads,” said Mark Taylor, communication director for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
“Trucks are big vehicles, of course, and they put a lot of stress on the roads,” he said.
Despite the major fluctuations in temperatures throughout the winter, Taylor said the timing for the restrictions is about the same as usual.
Taylor said it is expected the restrictions will last until mid-May, but that is dependent on weather conditions.
“They have a big influence on the conditions of roads, as everybody can appreciate. Usually, in May, the weather and the ground temperature is at a point that we’re comfortable with,” he said.
Currently, the restrictions are expected to end at midnight on May 15 in southern New Brunswick and at midnight on May 22 in the north.
