A two-year member of the Saint John Police Force (SJPF) has been charged after the Fredericton Police Force concluded an investigation.
Saint John police Chief Robert Bruce requested the investigation after a report of a member using excessive force while trying to make an arrest uptown in August.
As a result of the investigation, Const. Benaiah Sok was charged with assault causing bodily harm.
The police force has re-assigned Sok to administrative duties with no public contact pending the criminal court proceedings.
Once those court proceedings have concluded, a Police Act investigation will follow.
“The Saint John Police Force considers complaints of excessive force very seriously. Our members are trained to respond using the National Use of Force Framework and we hold them to the highest standard of accountability in this respect,” Bruce said in a news release.
The force said remains confident in the judicial process and will provide further information to the public as things move forward.
Sok will appear in court on February 7, 2022.
