The New Brunswick medical community is mourning the sudden and unexpected passing of a well-known cardiologist.
Dr. Sohrab Lutchmedial passed away on Monday, according to a statement from the New Brunswick Heart Centre in Saint John.
“He was an adopted New Brunswicker who dedicated more than 20 years to the New Brunswick Heart Centre and the care of patients suffering from heart disease,” said the statement issued Tuesday.
Lutchmedial was the director of the interventional cardiology program at the centre, sat on the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke board, and was the Atlantic representative for the Canadian Association of Interventional Cardiologists, according to his biography on the heart centre’s website.
Beyond his dedication to clinical excellence, the centre said Lutchmedial championed research, education and mentorship.
He co-founded the outcomes research group CoVeR-NB, was a founding member of the IMPART research cooperative, and created medical teaching videos for the heart centre patient population.
“Sohrab will be sorely missed by so many whom he has touched,” said the centre.
Dr. Mark MacMillan, president of the New Brunswick Medical Society, said they were deeply saddened to learn of Lutchmedial’s sudden passing.
“Dr. Lutchmedial was a valued member of the medical community in Saint John and across the province,” MacMillan said in a statement.
No details about funeral arrangements have been released.
