Police in the K.V. are looking to fill up their roster of volunteer chaplains.
The force only has one right now, a Muslim Imam named Abid Sheikh.
Inspector Anika Becker said chaplains compliment the Peer Support Program of the Kennebecasis Police Force.
“A big function is next of kin death notifications which is a very difficult thing for officers and anyone to do so having the support of a chaplain is very helpful to the officers and the families who are involved,” Becker said.
Inspector Becker said some officers find it comforting to speak with the chaplain following a difficult call or shift.
“Sometimes the chaplains will go on a ride along with the officers and usually it’s because the officer is looking for that, looking for the spirtual encouragement or support,” Becker said.
Inspector Becker said another instance where chaplains provide support is during a promotional ceremony when a chaplain may bless the badges.
Anyone looking to apply must be an ordained minister in good standing with a recognized religious organization or group.
Background checks are required to apply and all candidates must submit a cover letter and CV with a letter of support from their governing religious authority.
