Cleanup is underway after oil from the Mactaquac Generating Station near Fredericton leaked into the Saint John River.
NB Power said an equipment failure in one of the turbine hubs led to the release of Teresso 32 lubricating oil
A news release from the utility says the oil is non-hazardous, biodegradable, and is not expected to harm aquatic organisms.
“At NB Power, we are committed to the protection of the environment and take situations such as this one very seriously,” Lori Clark, senior vice president of operations, said in a statement.
“As such, we started addressing the leak as soon as possible and we are advising the public out of respect for those who live and work near the river.”
Sunday’s statement did not say when the leak occurred or how much oil went into the river.
NB Power said the oil sheen is contained between downstream of the Mactaquac Dam and Fredericton.
It went on to say that the incident was immediately reported to federal and provincial environmental authorities, as well as the Kingslear First Nation.
