Wildfires in central Canada have prompted a special air quality statement here in New Brunswick.
Environment Canada said Tuesday that a smoke plume is expected to sweep southeastward throughout the day.
“This smoke may descend close to the ground and reduce air quality for several hours,” said the air quality statement.
According to the latest air quality forecast, the Air Quality Health Index is expected to remain at two or “Low Risk” for most of the province through Wednesday night.
The exception is in the Edmundston area, where the index could reach five or “Moderate Risk” in smoke.
The air quality statement said the smoke is expected to move out of the province later Wednesday, which will lead to improved air quality for all areas.
Officials say hundreds of wildfires are burning from northwestern Ontario through British Columbia.
