The lawyers representing a former New Brunswick doctor say Premier Blaine Higgs used his parliamentary privilege to attack an innocent man.
The Crown dropped charges against Dr. Jean-Robert Ngola last week in connection with failing to quarantine after a trip to Quebec.
In the provincial legislature Tuesday, Higgs challenged the physician to waive his privacy rights so he can share what he knows about last year’s COVID-19 outbreak in Campbellton.
In a statement following the comment, Dr. Ngola’s lawyers, Joel Etienne and Christian Michaud, said the premier is unfairly singling out a racialized Canadian with no justification and the “clock is ticking” for him to apologize.
The lawyers revealed how they were constantly stonewalled in obtaining materials from the premier’s office when trying to build their case.
During a media briefing last spring, the premier noted how an irresponsible health care worker was “patient zero” in a Campbellton COVID-19 outbreak after failing to self-isolate following an out-of-province trip.
