A new shipping agreement will bring goods to Port Saint John from the Mediterranean on a weekly basis.
Hapag-Lloyd announced its first vessel, the Liverpool Express, will arrive May 27.
The announcement follows word of an agreement between Canadian Pacific and Hapag-Lloyd late last year.
“The addition of Hapag Lloyd’s weekly Mediterranean import service in Saint John is another achievement in the long-term strategy toward the modern, port of the future,” said Port Saint John CEO Jim Quinn in a press release.
The release credits CP rail’s access to the U.S. midwest as a major factor in the agreement.
Quinn says the port’s $205 million terminal modernization project deserves credit for bringing more business to Saint John.
