NB Power has announced the winners of this year’s Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards.
Among those being honoured this year are Jane Burchill of Saint John, along with Hampton High School.
Burchill received the Rising Star Award, which recognizes a person under 30 who has shown outstanding commitment to energy efficiency and conservation.
According to the utility, Burchill played a key role to increase energy literacy levels and empowered students to take action on climate change in her previous role with the Gaia Project.
“She has personally engaged thousands of students in discussions and hand-on projects around energy efficiency and sustainability and inspires colleagues, friends and family with her passion and energy,” read the utility’s profile of Burchill.
Meanwhile, Hampton High School received the Education Award for its focus on sustainability.
The school was the first smoke-free campus in the province and one of the first schools to start recycling, according to the utility.
It has solar panels on its roof, a greenhouse, and a garden that provides fresh produce for the Hampton Food Basket.
“Valuable hands-on learning experiences and inspiring conversations have driven major changes at the school and in the community,” said NB Power.
“Teachers and students are leaving no stone unturned looking for ways to reduce energy use and minimize their environmental impact for a more sustainable future.”
A total of seven New Brunswick individuals, businesses, organizations, educational institutions, and communities were honoured in the six award categories.
Joe Waugh and the Horizon Health Network each received the Legacy Award, the Partnership Award went to Homesol Building Solutions, the kinesiology building at UNB Fredericton received the Innovation Award, and the village of Perth-Andover was awarded the Community Award.
