The sky over the Saint John Airport has become even quieter — at least for the time being.
All regularly scheduled commercial flights in and out of the airport are temporarily suspended until further notice.
Air Canada’s lone flight between Saint John and Montreal made its last departure just after 6:10 a.m. Monday.
The airline announced the temporary suspension on Dec. 8 amid reduced traffic due to COVID-19, ongoing travel restrictions and quarantine rules.
Air Canada has also halted all flights in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and suspended four routes in Fredericton, Halifax, Charlottetown and Deer Lake.
Despite having no commercial flights for the foreseeable future, the Saint John Airport (YSJ) remains optimistic about the months ahead.
“Air Canada, Sunwing, and Porter Airlines are committed to restoring their flight schedules to YSJ as soon as travel restrictions are lifted and passenger demand returns – perhaps as early as April,” the airport said in a statement on its website. “Flair Airlines is also planning to launch their new service this year. We look forward to welcoming them back.”
The airport said it also remains encouraged by the recent announcement of funding for the aviation sector, including small airports like YSJ.
Runways at the airport remain open for private air service and emergency medical use until air service returns.
