The former CEO of Opportunities New Brunswick has a new gig.
On Wednesday, Toronto Global, an economic development organization that represents municipalities in the Toronto area, announced that Stephen Lund will be its new CEO.
Lund served for five years as the CEO and Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Small Business at Opportunities New Brunswick. It was announced back in January that he would be leaving the position.
“To say that I am excited about the opportunity to join the highly respected team at Toronto Global is an understatement,” said Lund in a news release.
“The Toronto Region is a powerhouse on the international stage and is only becoming more attractive to international investors as we navigate these unchartered waters in the post-COVID era. There is so much opportunity to bring in the right investments that will strengthen and rebuild our regional economy, and I am honoured to take on this task working with all of our partners from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.”

Originally from Saint John, Lund had 30 years of experience in finance and economic development before he became head of ONB five years ago. He was CEO of Nova Scotia Business Inc. from 2001 to 2013, and CEO of Bermuda Business Development Agency. He also served as vice-president of industrial benefits and community affairs with Irving Shipbuilding Inc.
“Stephen’s depth of experience in the economic development industry, his proven track record, combined with his understanding and appreciation of the important part Toronto Global is playing in the rebuilding of our regional economy, make him the right person to fill this role and work together alongside our partners and stakeholders,” said Mark Cohon, chair of the board of directors at Toronto Global.
“His reputation as an exceptional leader that creates an outstanding corporate culture for his team gives me confidence that he is the right person to lead Toronto Global into the future.”
Toronto Global works to help international companies do business in Toronto. They actively seek global companies interested in expanding to the Toronto Region and connect investors with the right opportunities that will facilitate the successful growth of their business. Lund was chosen for the job after an international search and will start on September 23.
“Over the years I have had the pleasure of working with Stephen in many different capacities,” said Frank McKenna, deputy chairman of the Toronto-Dominion Bank and former Premier of New Brunswick, in the release.
“His proven track record for attracting FDI and working effectively with all stakeholders, including government partners, is outshined only by his energy, enthusiasm and passion for his work. This is truly a loss for Atlantic Canada and a win for the Toronto Region. I wish him all the best in his new role.”
