New Brunswick Liberal leader Kevin Vickers touted the benefits of small modular reactors or SMRs during a campaign stop in Saint John on Wednesday.
He said technology being developed in the Port City can generate economic growth and address climate change through SMR’s.
“These small yet powerful nuclear reactors can provide clean safe low-cost energy that can back up renewables. They produce minimal waste and can even reduce the volume of existing nuclear waste,” Vickers said.
He said a Liberal government would work quickly to partner with the federal government to bring small modular reactor production to New Brunswick.
Meanwhile, the Liberal leader would not sell off Cannabis NB if he becomes premier.
Vickers said the potential privatization was discussed during last week’s stability talks in Fredericton.
“We’re seeing a trending upwards of profits. I am told by sources that those profits will rise exponentially in the next little while,” Vickers said.
Vickers was also asked if he would resurrect the proposed $50-million new New Brunswick Museum announced by the former Gallant government which was quickly scrapped early into the Higgs mandate.
Vickers pledged to consult with the community on the project.
“We have to seize every opportunity to generate employment and to generate our economy,” Vickers said.
