Giant hogweed and the emerald ash borer are among the most common invasive species in New Brunswick.
This is National Invasive Species Awareness Week.
Kristin Elton, project coordinator with the New Brunswick Invasive Species Council, says a number of campaigns are being launched to raise awareness over the next year.
“‘Don’t Let it Loose’ which is messaging about responsible pet ownership, ‘Buy Local, Burn Local’ is asking people not to move firewood and ‘Play, Clean, Go’ which is cleaning out the treads of your bike tires and making sure your equipment is clean before you go from one campsite to another.”
Elton says these programs are building on the success of last year’s ‘Clean, Drain, Dry’ campaign which urged boaters to help reduce the spread of aquatic hitchhikers like zebra mussels.
She says the council will often raise awareness through events and meeting people but she adds the pandemic has changed that strategy and they’ll be looking at other options to get their message out.
